AJ Malme

Drums

A.J. Malme (McCracken) has been playing in area bands, studying and teaching percussive arts for over 12 years. He began playing in the area while attending the University of Delaware. A.J. played in numerous University ensembles including Orchestra, Jazz, Marching, Percussion and Gamelon (Indonesian percussion). He was the Timpanist for the Delaware Repertory Orchestra under Leo Aramjian and played in the percussion sections of the Haddonfield Symphony and Glassboro State (Rowan University) Orchestras.

A.J. worked for Harbor Cruises and played in the topside house bands for the Lady Christina, Spirit of Philadelphia, Bay Lady and Lady Baltimore ships. A.J. was the original drummer for Wilmington's own "Boysie Lowrey Alumni Big Band", a band started through The Christina Cultural Arts Center. It was an 18 piece Big Band comprised of students and professional friends of Robert "Boysie" Lowery (Jazz saxophonist and educator credited with teaching and mentoring Clifford Brown and other Jazz greats). AJ toured the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. with the "Fantasy" show band ending with stints in Ocean City, Maryland and Atlantic City, New Jersey. He also played drums for local show bands "Champagne" and "Parody Show & Dance Band". In the "Parody" band AJ started on drums then moved out front to sing with infamous songstress Sara Francis.

AJ began playing drums for Club Phred in 2004 when they needed a drummer to play with Mark Farner Formerly of Grand Funk Railroad for the CEEF benefit concert at the Big Kahuna nightclub in Wilmington. AJ came in and played the gig with one rehearsal with Mark before performing. It was a whirlwind two days that ended up with AJ playing drums full time for Club Phred. During the day you can find AJ selling Harley-Davidson Motorcycles in New Jersey, and by night he is practicing, teaching or playing in the tri-state area.
